Edtech company Morressier, a platform to connect academic conferences, has raised $1.7 million in a round led by Redalpine with participation from Jan Reichelt, cofounder of academic network Mendeley, and Jan Maier, cofounder of AVEDAS.
The Berlin company has built a SaaS-based platform for sharing offline academic conference material. According to the company, the current state of conferences leaves a lot of academic material unreachable and disconnected unless you’re physically there.
The platform allows for the sharing of abstracts and posters and the gathering of analytics on trends and topics where researchers can follow and discover each other’s work. Currently 250 academic conferences and associations are using Morressier, including the International Diabetes Federation and World Psychiatric Association.
“Together, we’re building a platform that will forge a new path forward in scholarly publishing, starting with the transformation of the outdated academic conference system,” said Sami Benchekroun, CEO of Morressier.
The new funds will be used to build new features for analysing and structuring content and to hire engineers.
“The founders’ early success in the area of academic conferences is the perfect foundation to create a long-lasting impact in a multi-billion dollar industry,” said Harald Nieder, partner at Redalpine.
Benchekroun and his cofounder Justus Weweler initially bootstrapped the company before deciding to take on investment.
