Bringing DevOps and security teams together, Mondoo raises $12 million in Atomico-led round

If you’re reading this right now, thank a software development and IT operations professional. Often the ones who never get the full credit they deserve, DevOps engineers are the ones that make a lot of things we take for granted possible. Now, getting these folks and the security teams together on one platform, and uniting them in a common goal of building efficient, scalable, and secure solutions? Enter Mondoo.

The Berlin/San Francisco-based infrastructure security startup has raised $12 million in a new funding round led by industry heavyweight Atomico. Combined with a previously unannounced $3 million seed round that was led by Firstminute Capital with participation from System. One, Mondoo is now loaded with $15 million and aims to accelerate the development of the platform and deliver on its promise: developer-first cloud security.

“One of the best ways to fight hackers and bad actors is to increase security expertise across the organization. Until now, the burden of keeping an organisation safe has rested on the security team alone,” commented Mondoo CEO and co-founder Soo Choi. “Mondoo is the first DevOps Security platform that codifies and automates complicated security topics across cloud, VMs, containers, and on-premise.”

Founded by seasoned industry veterans (Ex-Chef Software, Nasa, Google, T-Mobile, and the list goes on) Soo Choi-Andrews, Christoph Hartmann, and Dominik Richter, Mondoo is taking on three key challenges typically faced by organisations managing a hybrid infrastructure: confidence, prioritisation, and team alignment.

Mondoo helps DevOps engineers improve security assessments and thereby reduces unplanned work, while a risk profile system of threats and their relative difficulty allows developers to prioritise, and a single source of truthiness makes life around the water cooler a whole lot easier for DevOps and security teams.

On the investment, Atomico principal Sasha Vidiborskiy comments, “Mondoo is a new kind of security company, one that was founded for DevOps engineers. Soo, Dominik and Christoph are DevOps and security experts - they founded Inspec, devsec.io, and OpenStack. Their viewpoint is shaped by their experience at Google, Chef Software, NASA, and Deutsche Telekom. We believe that Mondoo is uniquely positioned to become a new global category leader in the cybersecurity space with a remarkable new product built for developer-centric business models. Regardless of whether they are in the cloud or on-premise.”

Mondoo’s Series A round was led by Atomico and saw the participation of a significant number of angel investors including MongoDB Chairman of the Board Tom Killalea, Cisco Board Member and Intuit CTO Marianna Tessel, OneLogin (and former Docusign) CISO Vanessa Pegueros, Github and Microsoft VP of Research Dr. Nicole Forsgren, Google VP of Product Bradley Horowitz, Redhat VP of Transformation and Puppet co-founder Andrew Clay Shafer, Instana co-founder Mirko Novakovic, and SoundCloud and Dance co-founder Eric Quidenus-Wahlforss.
