UK government unveils space tech initiative

A total of 18 space tech projects are to be funded by the UK government in a renewed growth funding initiative announced yesterday.

The funding pot of around £6.5 million will be shared across projects which harness "space-enabled technology to address local priorities."

The funding is part of the government's levelling-up programme aimed at widening the economy's reach into more UK regions.

Beneficiaries will include young engineering companies hoping to enter the UK's space market, for instance deploying Earth imagery to enhance public services provision.

Given the regional funding element, the growth funding will be administered via locally-led space clusters across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. A £600,000 state funding allocation to regional space clusters was announced in February 2022.
