Storyblok, the Austrian startup behind an eponymous content management system (CMS), has raised an $8.5 million Series A round to fund international expansion. The investment was led by Mubadala Capital and joined by previous backers firstminute capital and 3VC.
Founded in 2017, the Storyblok team has built a headless CMS that’s designed for both back-end and front-end users, which co-founder and CEO Dominik Angerer believes sets it apart. “In practice most platforms are only geared towards developers, which makes them incredibly difficult for non-technical people to use,” he said. Storyblok gives developers the flexibility to build digital platforms, but on the marketer side, it also offers visual editing tools and customisable content blocks so those teams have some hands-on creative control. The CMS is currently powering more than 60,000 projects across 130 countries. The startup’s clients include large enterprises such as Pizza Hut, Adidas and Decathlon, as well as tens of thousands of solo developers. The new funding will go to revamping the platform and expanding the business to a couple key European markets. As Angerer noted, “Germany and the Republic of Ireland both have vibrant tech scenes and there is a huge demand for marketing technology.”
