Crowdfunding platform Kickstarter had a good year, as evidenced by the snapshot of 2014 the American company published yesterday.
All in all, $529 million was pledged to Kickstarter projects in 2014, and 22,252 projects were ultimately 'successfully funded'. Unsurprisingly, the bulk of the funding came from the United States, with $335.5 million pledged by over 2.2 million backers.
Kickstarter also gave a map-based overview of which countries had how many backers, as well as the total dollars pledged in 2014, but didn't break it down in more detail. So I thought it would be interesting to look at which European countries were leading the pack in terms of crowd-funding when it comes to activity on Kickstarter (see chart below).
I extracted the data from the map so you don't have to, and what I found was that people in the UK are by far the most active Kickstarter funders in Europe, with more than $39 million pledged by 261,771 backers - an average of $149 per person.
That's more than three times the dollars pledged than Germany, the number two, which came in at $12,860,000 pledged by 63,064 backers - a higher average of $204 per backer though.
Perhaps the most surprising country in the list is tiny Switzerland (population: 8 million people), which came in at number 6 with almost $4 million pledged by 13,521 backers. That's more than Spain and Italy, which have a combined population of about 110 million people.
More facts and figures about Kickstarter's 2014 can be found here.
As far as I can tell, Kickstarter's main rival, Indiegogo, has not (yet) shared similar statistics for 2014, so unfortunately we can't compare them at this point.
