GoPro has acquired Zurich, Switzerland-based sensor technology startup Skybotix

Although there's no been official communication or confirmation from either company, it appears GoPro has acquired Zurich, Switzerland-based Skybotix, as mentioned yesterday in an article on TechCrunch.

A few months ago, the American manufacturer of action cameras established a Swiss subsidiary - GoPro Switzerland - around the time Skybotix announced that it would suddenly be discontinuing its VI-Sensor project "due to a strategic refocus".

The company's 'Visual-Inertial (VI) sensor' was meant to be used in unmanned vehicles and robotic devices to help save lives during crises and emergencies, as it was ably to direct drones and whatnot in complex flying environments. GoPro is, of course, working on a drone of its own.

Skybotix, a spin-off from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ), had issued a call for trialling its technology back in May 2014.
