Castor EDC, an Amsterdam-based health tech startup creating tools for sharing medical research data, has secured a €1.1 million innovation grant from the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 program.
Castor EDC will use the funding to further develop its programs for making big data available for international medical research. It will build an AI-based system for researchers to collaborate and share research data with each other, even before it’s published in a journal.
The company’s mission statement is to make medical research data ‘FAIR’: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. Founder Dr Derk Arts said the initial inspiration for founding Castor EDC came from medical researchers still using excel sheets for collecting and processing their research data.
“We make his or her life as a researcher easier: by using Castor EDC they can effortlessly collect and share high quality data,” said Arts. “Our system warns the researcher if someone else has already researched, or is researching, a similar topic.”
As of today, 9,000 users have worked with Castor EDC to collect data for more than 2,000 medical studies. The data is collected and stored in compliance with health data protection regulations in the US, UK, and the Netherlands.
