Belgian smart wristband startup PlayPass raises €1.9 million, gears up for international expansion

PlayPass, a Belgian-founded startup that provides smart wristband solutions for music festivals, has secured €1.9 million in funding from Newion and existing angel investors, Tijd.be reports. The company expects to raise another €10 million by early 2020 as it plans its geographic expansion and sizes up the sports event market.

Founded in Antwerp in 2012, PlayPass has raised €7.9 million to date. It has worked with 150 festivals in 20 countries, processing from 25,000 to 80,000 visitors per day. The smart wristband with an RFID chip provided by the company can be used in for access control, accreditation management, cashless payments, and brand activation and social media. While fully GDPR-compliant, it also provides the organisers with a lot of data on participant behaviour.

PlayPass is planning to set up new offices in Asia (in Singapore or Hong Kong), South America (in Chile), and Europe (in Spain, Germany, or the UK) by the end of this year.

In addition to that, PlayPass has partnered with Belgian football clubs KV Mechelen and Anderlecht to offer their solutions for fans to enter the stadium and pay for drinks and snacks. The startup plans to reach out to more clubs, including those from England, Spain, and Germany.
