[Updated] 700 shared e-mopeds — but not e-scooters — will arrive in Amsterdam this summer

Update: This story has been butchered edited to reflect a misunderstanding between tech.eu and a spokesperson of the City of Amsterdam, who initially replied to our questions thinking that they were about e-mopeds (like Felyx) rather than kick e-scooters (like Voi or Dott). The previous version of the article stated that e-scooters will appear in Amsterdam in June 2020, which is, not the case.

A spokesperson for the City of Amsterdam has confirmed to tech.eu that two “ermits for shared e-scooters are currently being issued,” and the new vehicles will hit the road around June. The names of the lucky permit holders will be announced by the end of May; they will join Felyx, the only shared e-moped provider currently operating in the Dutch capital.

The maximum total amount of e-mopeds expected to appear in Amsterdam is 700, as each permit would allow to bring up to 350 two-wheelers into the city. Riders of the shared e-mopeds will be required to wear helmets and won't be allowed to use bike paths in the central part of Amsterdam, limited by the A10 Ring road.

In addition to that, the city has compiled a list of no-go locations where e-moped operators “may never offer the vehicles,” which probably means that the customers won't be able to leave the two-wheelers around there. In a nutshell, the no-go list includes the places most popular among the tourists that gather significant crowds 24/7.

• in the parking facilities at the ferries across the IJ ;
• on Leidseplein and in the area around Leidseplein (city centre);
• on Rembrandtplein and in the area around Rembrandtplein (city centre);
• in the Eerste van der Helststraat, between Gerard Douplein and Sarphatipark, and the area around it;
• in the Nine Streets (city centre);
• in the Red Light District area (city centre);
• on Museumplein and the area around Museumplein;
• at the Hallen in Amsterdam West;
• in the area around the Rokin metro station (city centre);
• in the area around metro station Vijzelgracht;
• in the area around the De Pijp metro station.
