MEL Science, a London-based science educational platform, has secured $14 million in Series B funding to continue expanding its subscription-based learning programme. International investors include Mubadala Investment Company, Channel 4 Ventures and other entities from Europe and China.
The edtech startup aims to bring science to life through educational kits, combining hands-on experiments with interactive VR simulations and live lessons – created to help students learn in intuitive, engaging ways. Its products are designed for children, ages 5 to 14, and can be used either by schools or as an at-home teaching aid. Like most tools that help with living and working remotely, the UK platform has seen an uptick in demand during the pandemic. “It provides a way to help parents fill the role of teachers during periods of classroom closures, and continually fuel their kids’ curiosity for, and interest in, subjects that are often difficult to grasp,” says CEO and co-founder Vassili Philippov. MEL Science’s goal is to inspire the next generation of scientists and STEM leaders. Since starting with chemistry in 2015, the UK company has added physics and STEM kits to its offering. The products as a whole have won the BETT “Innovator of the Year 2020” award, EdTech Digest’s Cool Tool Award for “Best VR/AR Solution” (part of its EdTech Awards, 2020), and, most recently, VR Award’s 2020 Education and Training award.
This latest round of funding will help the business develop its products further and expand into new markets.
