Trafi, a Lithuanian mobility services startup, will help the main public transport agency in Munich, Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG), to create and release a city-owned Mobility-as-a-Service program that connects public, private, and shared transportation options.
In addition to traditional public transportation methods, city dwellers can choose from bike shares, scooters, ride-hailing apps, ride-pooling services — a variety of vehicles and transportation styles. Trafi’s technology brings all these mobility options into one system, accessible on one app. The whitelabel product will be branded by the MVG.
“Sharing is part of our DNA as a public transport operator. The MVG’s current goal is to also cover the first and last mile by cooperating with new partners and offers. Our customers want to reach their destination from and to their front door, and not just from stop to stop,” says Ingo Wortmann, chairman of the MVG management board.
The city put out a call to mobility providers who might be interested and held an information session yesterday. Participants included several Munich taxi companies, Bird, BOND Mobility, Circ, CleverShuttle, Dott, emmy, IsarFunk, SHARE NOW, Sixt, STATTAUTO München, TIER Mobility, and VOI. The companies have until mid-March to decide if they want to join as partners.
Christof Schminke of Traf commented: “This new partnership between Trafi and MVG is an encouraging signal that an increasing number of cities want to connect their whole mobility networks to create a seamless experience for their users. After launching the largest MaaS solution in the world in Berlin, we are thrilled to join forces with Munich in our quest to create cities where moving is easy,”
Founded in Vilnius in 2007, Trafi works with city governments around the world to integrate and synchronize public and private transport methods, so that growing populations can move about easily and sustainably. In 2019 the company launched its most extensive MaaS program in Berlin, now managed by the city’s public transport authority, BVG.
Trafi is also used by Apple, Google, Lyft, and Gojek.
